How to Avoid Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection. Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Most infected people have no symptoms. Although toxoplasmosis parasites may grow and multiply within a week of entering a person’s body, it may be weeks or months before symptoms of infection appear. Infants who are infected before birth can have serious mental or physical handicaps. The people who are more risk of getting toxoplasmosis are new born infants and people with weak immune systems. Toxoplasmosis passes from animals to humans. The parasite infects warm blooded animals mostly.

Symptoms of Toxoplasmosis

• Flu like symptoms
• Swollen lymph glands
• Muscle aches
• Pains
• Damage of eye
• Damage of brains
• Physical handicaps
• Anemia
• Bruises
• Bleeding
• Enlarged liver or spleen
• Yellow skin
• Seizures
• Muscle cramps
• Hearing loss
• Headaches

TWP TIPS

• Avoid eating contaminated food.
• Drink only boiled or filtered water.
• Eating inadequately cooked meat that is contaminated with the parasite will also cause the disease.
• Women who become infected during or just before pregnancy can pass the infection to their unborn infants.
• Wear gloves when gardening or doing anything outside that involves handling soil or after gardening.
• Handle cat feces and liter properly.
• Wash hands after handling cat feces.
• If your cat is kept indoors and never fed raw or undercooked meat.
• Dispose unused sandboxes which cat has used as litter boxes.
• Wash hands well with soap and warm water after touching raw meat.
• Have someone who is healthy and not pregnant handle raw meat. Wear clean latex gloves when touching raw meat.
• Wash cutting boards, surfaces, knifes and utensils that might have touched raw meat. Wash hands well with soap and warm water afterwards.
• Cook all meat thoroughly, until it is no longer pink in the center or until the juices run clear. Do not sample meat before it is fully cooked.
