Tick-Borne Disease Babesiosis Spreads In Hudson Valley
VALHALLA, NY (WCBS 880) - Lyme Disease is still the most prevalent tick-borne illness in the Hudson Valley but doctors at the New York Medical College in Valhalla are warning about another.
Babesiosis is a red blood cell parasite similar to Malaria. It can be mild, requiring no treatment at all, but in some cases it can be fatal.
WCBS 880′s Sean Adams: Babesiosis Can Be Fatal
Jackie Moore from Briarcliff Manor had a terrible case.
“It was horrible. At home, it just started out with just lots of aches, and the fevers were terrible, exhaustion,” Jackie told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams. “Everyday, I would literally wake up twice as tired as I was the day before, and then, in the hospital, the headaches were severe.”
Because she has no spleen, her symptoms were extreme.
According to a recent study, there were just six cases of Babesiosis in the lower Hudson Valley a decade ago.
That number has grown to well over 100 cases per year.
It’s still a relatively small number compared to Lyme Disease. Doctors say there’s no need to panic but are advising people to be aware.
