Mononucleosis is one of those illnesses that seems to creep around high schools and college campuses. I don't usually hear about people in my office building catching mono or really any other adults who are out of the college scene coming down with it. That could be because they already had it when they were younger, were exposed and never became ill, or it could be simply the fact that they no longer live in the dorms or roam the halls of the schools where infectious bugs like Mono can easily pass from person to person. The fact is that most people who contract Mono, are in the age range of 15-24. Nearly 95% of adults ages 35+ have already been exposed and have developed an antibody to the virus.
This "Kissing Disease" was well-known for a while on my campus at the University of Rhode Island during my junior year. I lived on campus for a semester in my sorority house, Sigma Kappa, and found that as soon as one girl caught Mono, the rest of the house seemed to come down with it shortly thereafter. Not only that, but almost all of the Greek houses in our circle had people suddenly becoming ill with Mono. Before we knew it, college kids were swarming the university campus clinic to get tested for the Mono Heterophile antibody and consequently, many of us were missing out some of our lectures.

To say it quickly goes "viral" is no pun intended. Truth is, it actually is a virus (Epstein-Barr, to be exact), and as you know it spreads through saliva, making it very contagious. It takes about four to eight weeks to incubate and leaves you feeling extremely tired and downright awful. I would post some pictures that I found of mono throat glands but they look kind of gnarly! You should definitely check with your healthcare provider if you know Mono is going around your campus and you have recently started feeling ill.
Thankfully, not everyone who is exposed to Mono actually becomes ill. There were plenty of sorority sisters in my house and Greek students in our circle who didn't get sick whatsoever. I unfortunately wasn't one of the lucky ones! I never knew at the time that companies like SeraCare Life Sciences actually collect plasma from people who are recently diagnosed with Mono. If I had known that then, I would have definitely donated plasma to make an extra $1000 in one quick weekend for only about 2 hours of my time. I wish someone had informed me about it then!
Well, it's true. SeraCare does in fact look for Mono diagnosed students to come and donate plasma. I recently have had a few college kids all from the same university come and donate plasma for the company and they were paid an extra $200 for referring their friends to go donate too. I thought Mono season was typically in the spring, which is when I last had a big wave of college kids asking me if they could donate plasma while sick with Mono. But just recently toward the end of October and now in November, I've been hearing about a lot of Mono cases again and have had several donors participate over the past few weeks.
Below I have provided some tips on how you can stay healthy in general as we have now entered the cold, flu, and apparently Mono season too! I recently had to stay home sick for a day blowing my nose and it seems like a lot of employees in office buildings everywhere are coming down with the common colds, flus, and other bugs that seem to pass around easily this time of year.

Tips on How to Stay Healthy This Fall & Winter!

Are you ready for cold and flu season? If you want to avoid being sick and feeling like you have to go to the doctor to get antibiotics and other drugs, it’s time NOW to be thinking about PREVENTION! Try following the tips below and you can be assured you will strengthen your body’s immune system during the winter season.
1 ~ Get adequate water – With the winter season here, it’s more important than ever to consume the amounts that are adequate for you.
2 ~ Keep stress to a minimum — There have been studies recently that have linked high stress levels to making a person more susceptible to catching colds and flu. Keep your stress to a minimum by working reasonable hours at work. Aim for at least one night per week to spend with friends and family. If your stress is out of hand and you feel like you need some help, let me know. I frequently work with people with stress / emotional challenges and utilize the Bach Flower Remedies to bring your emotional health, back into balance. Be sure to read my post about theflowers here.
3 ~ Healthy eating – Of course maintaining a good healthy diet comprised of fresh fruits, vegetables, and minimal amounts of organic meats is another way to keep your body clean and in good working order! Try eating an extra piece of fruit or veggie every day!
4 ~ Supplements – Even if we all eat perfectly well all the time with loads of fresh fruits and vegetables, we will need to supplement our diet with nutritional supplementation. What you will need, depends significantly on what your lifestyle is. If you’re not sure if you even need supplements, then you need to read this post. If you’re wanting to supplement your lifestyle, let me know and I can help design a program for you. But here are some general guidelines of supplements I especially recommend during this time of year:
Young Living Thieves & Purification – These two powerful therapeutic essential oils are a MUST HAVE to protect yourself against bacteria. Thieves has been University tested and found to be highly effective against airborne bacteria. They are very POWERFUL when mixed together. I just get an empty mist/spray bottle and fill with water. Then I add 10 drops of each of these oils to it. Shake vigorously and spray around your house! This will kill airbone bacteria and other pollutants to help keep your air fresh and pure and your lungs free from toxins! Be sure to not spray directly on top of fine furnishings as the oils and water could have a detrimental effect. I usually spray a few feet above the carpeting around fine furniture and directly above head when there is nothing underneath for the oils/water to hurt.
Young Living NingXia Red- NingXia Red offers the highest protection against the dangerous superoxide free radical as tested by Brunswick Laboratories’ S-ORAC test; contains the power of the whole Ningxia wolfberry; formulated to maintain and support normal immune function; contains five of the richest sources of free-radical-fighting antioxidants: wolfberry puree, blueberry, pomegranate, apricot, and raspberry juices; includes the essential oils of lemon and orange, which contain the phytochemical d-limonene to promote normal cell life cycles. Normally this is recommended about 1 oz. per day; but during cold & flu season, I increase mine sometimes to 3 oz. per day.
Standard Process Products-There are several products in the Standard Process/Medi-Herb product line that I recommend during this time of year especially. Your unique health situation would determine which one would be appropriate for you. Get in touch with me to learn more about these whole food supplements!
5 ~ Exercise regularly – It is important to exercise regularly, even if it’s only for 15 minutes a day! Get out and take a short walk and enjoy the cooler weather.
6 ~ Get adequate sleep — The average person needs six to eight hours of sleep per night. If you’re not getting that kind of sleep, your body is extremely vulnerable to getting sick. Sleep is like recharging your batteries! You’ve got to do it in order to keep the machine running. Aim for one night in the middle of the week to get to bed an hour earlier.
7 ~ Wash your hands regularly – Keep those bacteria and viruses off of your hands and out of your mouth and eyes. Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer close-by for those instances where you can’t get to soap and water.
8 ~ No smoking – If you smoke, quit! I realize you know this, but it bears repeating as smoking significantly weakens your immune system. If you want to quit and have tried all the other methods, let me know. I have some nutritional recommendations that can definitely help you stop smoking!
9 ~ Eliminate ALL forms of sugar. This includes not only the obvious kinds (cake, cookies, etc.), but bread, pasta, rice, yogurt and commercial, store-bought fruit juices. Although different types of sugars, they still turn to sugar in the body and compromise your immune system.
10 ~ Despite your best efforts, sometimes we still can sometimes feel like we’re “coming down with something”. Do the following to help your body recover quickly: Eliminate all dairy products; Eliminate all alcohol; Eliminate all grains (bread, rice, pasta, etc.); Boost your Vitamin C (with bioflavanoids) intake when you initially feel something coming on; Boost your intake of Zinc; Increase water consumption (even more than normal!); Eat less food as this will give your body a much needed rest from digestion and give it a chance to concentrate on fighting off potential invaders; If you’re taking Young Living NingXia Red, increase your dosage. Add herbs like Echinacea, Goldenseal and Grapefruit Seed Extract to your supplemental regime; Get more rest than normal. If you normally get 6 hours of sleep a night, try increasing to 7 or 8. Increase the recommended supplementation above.
